Transformer Tank
The transformer tank is the main outer body of an oil-immersed power and distribution transformer. It serves as a protective enclosure that houses the core, windings and insulating oil, ensuring safe and efficient transformer operation.
Functions of Transformer Tank
- Mechanical Protection
- Shields the internal active parts (core & coils) from physical damage.
- Electrical Insulation Support
- Contains insulating mineral oil or ester oil that provides dielectric strength and cooling
- Heat Dissipation
- Works along with radiators or cooling fins to dissipate heat generated during operation.
- Structural Support for Accessories
- Holds components like
- Conservator tank
- Buchholz relay
- Pressure relief device
- Oil level indicator
- Breather
- Bushing terminals
Types of Transformer Tanks
- Corrugated Tank
- Radiator Type Tank
- Hermetically sealed Tank
- Pressurized Tank
Material & construction
Material:
- mild steel (Ms), sometimes Stainless Steel for corrosive areas
- Manufacturing Methods:
- CNC sheet cutting
- Fabrication & welding
- Pressure leak testing
- Surface treatment & painting (epoxy, poor powder coat)
- Surface protection / coating
- Shot blasting (SA2.5)
- Epoxy primer coating
- PO/Liquid epoxy/powder coating for uv & corrosion resistance
- Key Quality Checks :
- Oil leakage test (pressure test 0.3-0.5 kg/cm²)
- Dimensional accuracy - welding NDT tests (DPT/MPT/UT where needed)
- Paint thickness measurement (DFT test)
